Spain
Excursions
La Coruña and Santander have superb beaches with clean, clear water and fine, white sand, as well as tempting shops and wares for the souvenir hunter. At least once each week, on a weekday afternoon, the teachers accompany the students to a focus of local cultural interest, such as a newspaper plant, an archaeological museum, a planetarium, or a nearby relic of ancient Roman architecture.
On weekends some of the Spanish brothers and sisters from the host families may join our students on our excursions out of town, some lasting the entire day. Past excursions have included places such as Bayona, Bilbao, Santillana del Mar, and la Toja.
During the six-week program, the groups enjoy weeklong excursions in an air-conditioned coach to sites such as Avila, La Coruña, Madrid, Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Segovia, and Toledo. The group stays in recommended three- and four-star hotels. All meals are included: continental breakfasts and full-course luncheons and dinners.
Stopping at Avila, the students view the medieval fortified walls; in La Coruña, they visit the Castillo S. Antón, Torre de Hércules and Plaza de María Pita; in Madrid, the group tours the Royal Palace and Prado Museum and, weather and calendar permitting, may elect to see a bullfight; in Salamanca, they discover the university, the "new" cathedral, and the Casa de las Conchas; in Santiago, they are impressed by the cathedral and the old city; in Segovia, they explore the castle and marvel at the Roman aqueduct; in Toledo, the tour isn't complete without a visit of the cathedral, the Tránsito Synagogue, and the House of El Greco. Sampling a Spanish paella is the culinary highlight of the travel experience.
