Spain

How to Apply

Eligibility: Students must have completed the ninth grade but not the twelfth. A two year study of the language is the usual requirement, but exceptions may be made for strong students who have completed only one year. Students must be prepared for a serious academic experience. Preference is for students able to demonstrate that they are in at least their third consecutive year of Spanish.

Applications: All candidates must submit an application, official transcript, and teacher recommendations. Since the number of candidates for these programs tends to exceed the available spaces, early applications are recommended; some, in fact, are received in early fall. Last minute applicants, if accepted, will be placed in families and classes in accordance with availability. A limited amount of need-based financial aid is allocated for each program.

Cost: The fee of $6695 includes airfare, transportation abroad, tuition, all meals and lodging, books, and entrance fees for group activities. Expenses not included in the fee are: passport, transportation immediately prior to and after the program, and personal expenses such as telephone calls and spending money. Costs are based on the exchange rate effective September 1. Prices are subject to equitable adjustment should there be a significant change in the rate of exchange or in the airfare prior to the start of the program.

Other stipulations:

All participants are expected to show sufficient maturity and the self-discipline to avoid inappropriate behavior. The program directors retain the right to send home (at parent expense) any student whose behavior jeopardizes the safety or viability of the group. Possession or use of controlled substances at any point in the program is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate dismissal.

Upon enrollment, information will be available to help students plan their transportation to the program starting point.

The orientation session is an integral, required portion of the program. Given the shortness of the program and the desire of many students to accelerate in their own school's Spanish curriculum, as well as the difference between cultures, no student may be excused from attendance.

The directors of the program reserve the right to vary the itinerary in accordance with travel conditions.

Upon return to the United States, students are released from the program at the point of entry once they have cleared U.S. customs. They are expected to have made their own arrangements for travel home.

A valid passport is required of all students.
