Families and the Home-Stay
Can you see yourself at the dinner table in a Spanish home, having just completed the mid-day meal, learning about current events in Spain, comparing music tastes with a Spanish family member? You can do this! And at program's end, there are always numerous tales of students planning to return to Spain, or of young Spaniards planning to visit the U.S.
Life in Spanish home can be very rewarding. Our host families come in many varieties: some with young children, some with older children; some two-parent, some single-parent; some older families, some younger. Though varied, all of our families share three characteristics: they like Americans; they live within easy commuting distance to School (often by bus); they all live in safe neighborhoods. The home-stay is an opportunity for students to live in a Spanish home and to develop a relationship with real people.
After a home site visit, families are selected with great care by the Programs' directors, and students are placed one to a family for maximum contact with Spanish language.
Each student is assigned to an appropriate class. Upon arrival in La Coruña the Spanish family is waiting to greet the American “hijo” (son) or “hija” (daughter). Complete immersion in Spanish language and culture is a reality as students share all meals with and become a part of the family. Student and family relationships are monitored closely, and all families are reevaluated at the conclusion of each program.
